I don’t believe there’s a way to achieve success without putting in some form of hard work. Even with the people who have seemed to elude the necessity to have actual talent have to put in double the work to get past all of the people who do. Hard work is a phrase I grew up with because both my teachers and parents knew that without it you’re wanting on chance and luck and if you know anything about me those are two things I will never, ever have in life. If I’m netting successful results it’s because I’m putting in that work.

In the land of social media it’s easy to be confused as to what exactly constitutes as hard work. From experience here are 5 ways to know that you’re working to your ability:

1. Sleep is non-existent.

Sleep is essential. I don’t believe you should lose sleep in the wake of hard work, but when you’re doing it right, it usually ends up that way. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve relied on train/bus rides to supply me with that extra hour of sleep. A deadline or campaign or project will keep you up until the sun rises because you know you’re not gonna honor that “I’ll just get up early and finish it.” It’s gotta be done now, sleep be damned.

2. You’re texts are in the double-triple digits.

I’ve always wondered how people let their text messages stack up until I rolled over this Sunday and saw 25 unread text messages. There’s no time to text when you’re working hard. It’s not personal, but some texts don’t warrant an immediate response when you’ve got projects stacked up that have nearing deadlines. Some folks will feel a way, but they’ll be okay. That juicy piece of gossip or gripe about boyfriend/girlfriend issues can wait for a little bit.

3. You’re either eating garbage or not eating at all.

When you’re on the move, cooking or that healthy eating you’ve been trying to get on is damn near impossible. There just isn’t enough time for that and when you finally do have that little bit of time, all you want to do is sleep. Even fast food may not be quick enough, that large $2.99 fun size bag of Doritos Cool Ranch will get you through the day — when you remember to eat!

4.   Wine or Alcohol becomes a regular part of your diet.

It’s extremely hard for me to get any work done when I’m drinking, unless I’m drinking wine. Red wine has powers to destroy some of that stress without getting you drunk to the point where you’re not working like alcohol probably would. It’s a nice stress reliever and it’s clutch if like me you’re an editor and that rendering process has you ready to break glass.

5. You’re seeing progress.

The whole idea is to reach this point when you are progressing in your field or whatever you’re working on. It made not be immediate, but little by little things begin to come together. If this isn’t happening then you made need to take a step back, analyze why things aren’t moving forward and adjust accordingly. But there is no other to gauge that you are actually “grinding” then to seeing the results of that “grind.”

Keep going!
