[BLOG] Event: Massa’s Gaze: Screenings & Discussions of the Depictions of Slavery in Film & Television.
Indiewire posted an interesting event that is hitting the NYC area. It’s a discussion from panelists that will discuss the depiction of slavery in the film and TV industry. With popular films like Django and 12 Years a Slave, I thought it was a right move to come up with this kind of event. There’s many who feel slavery shouldn’t be shown in any kind of form, on the big screen or little screen. There are also a lot of people who support the showing of slavery because they believe it’s just our history, cannot run from it or ignore that it happened. No matter what, films like those will always spark some controversy. Instead of battling each other on it, why not have a simple discussion? That’s the right way to do it. Here’s a post from the MOMI website.
Until the releases in the past two years of 12 Years a Slave and Django Unchained, the subject of slavery, the “peculiar institution” that shaped the American identity and psyche, has been largely absent from the American film and television narratives. Museum of the Moving Image marks the beginning of Black History Month by hosting an afternoon program of rare screenings and lively discussions with major critics and filmmakers that take a close look at the artistic treatment by the filmmakers who get to tell this story and the meanings of the stories they select to tell.
Indiewire also posted ticket information here: Tickets: $15 ($12 students / $9 Museum members / free for Silver Screen members and above). Ticket includes access to the Museum’s galleries and all Massa’ Gaze screenings and discussions. Order online or call 718 777 6800 to reserve tickets.
Should be an interesting discussion. The event is from 1pm-8pm and is on February 1st. Will be held Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens.
